Ruvuma Wilderness Project
The Ruvuma Wilderness Project is Africa’s largest community-led forest carbon initiative, protecting 1M+ hectares of miombo woodland. A collaboration between Carbon Tanzania and Revalue, it uses cutting-edge technology and community-driven conservation to produce radically better carbon credits.
Using Revalue’s Model R, credits go above and beyond existing standards with LiDAR-verified biomass data, dynamically checked baselines, and innovative evaluation of social change. Each credit targets 1.2 tonnes of CO₂ avoided, offering buyers an additional layer of protection against over-crediting.
Active intervention is needed to tackle unplanned deforestation due to shifting agriculture. Funds from the project are used by local communities and authorities for forest conservation, strengthening governance and to drive community-led socio-economic development.
